Verna

Becoming a Kindermusik Educator was a natural progression for Verna who studied piano, violin and viola at school and holds a Graduate Diploma of Education (P-10) from Griffith University. Verna’s undergraduate studies at the University of Queensland included Journalism, Japanese, German & Russian and, after graduation, her interest in education and languages lead her to Japan where she participated in the Japan Exchange Teaching (JET) Programme.

It was in Japan that Verna first discovered the benefits of using music as a teaching tool. As a result, a whole generation of children in country Hiroshima sing “The Wheels on the Bus” with an Aussie accent! Verna also studied dance (classical, tap and modern) for almost 20 years and attained her student teacher’s diploma with the Commonwealth Society of Teacher’s of Dance (now Comdance) in 1991.

Verna was first introduced to Kindermusik in 2001 when she attended classes with her 7 month-old son. She loved the warmth of the small-group setting and the way Kindermusik supports the parent’s role in educating children. She was particularly impressed with Kindermusik’s focus on family involvement and the inclusion of quality materials for home use. (Verna found the home CDs invaluable for their calming and distracting qualities during long day-trips while traveling through the UK with her 20 month-old son in 2002!)

Verna has been a accredited Kindermusik educator since 2003.  She also served on the committee for the Kindermusik Educators Association of Australia (2004-2008) and on the Australian Kindermusik Advisory Board (2016-2021). Verna believes that her journey to masterful teaching is an ever-evolving, life-long process and takes the opportunity to attend professional development seminars and to connect with her peers whenever possible.

When asked why she joined Kindermusik, Verna replied with the same response we get from many of our educators – to balance family life with a job she is passionate about. She began teaching while 4 months pregnant with her second child and loves the flexibility being a Kindermusik educator has allowed her while raising a family. She loves the relationships she develops with her Kindermusik families, the warm social environment, and the constant rewards of seeing a child’s musical growth. All classes are lead by accredited Kindermusik educator and Top Program owner, Verna Hewitt, who holds a Graduate Diploma of Education (P-10) and has over 18 years experience in early childhood music education. Verna participates in regular, ongoing professional development and holds a current positive notice Blue Card.
